HELP
Welcome to
online help. The first half of this document provides detailed descriptions of
the available map tools. The second half of this document describes other key
features and functions that are available in the Hotspots interface. Please
select the appropriate icon below for more detailed information about a tool or
a feature.
Zoom in
The
Zoom in tool
magnifies or reveals more detail about a particular location on the
map. To view more detail about an area, select the Zoom
in tool and move the cursor to a corner of the area on
the map you want to magnify. Click and hold down the left mouse button
and drag a box around the area to be magnified, then release the left
mouse button.
Zoom out

The
Zoom out
tool allows you to display a larger area of the map at a lower level
of detail. There are 2 methods for zooming out. The first method is to
simply select the Zoom out tool, move the
cursor over the location of interest, and click once with the left
mouse button. The second method involves clicking and dragging a box
to zoom out using the same technique as the Zoom in tool.
Pan

The
Pan tool
moves the map view in any direction. To pan, select the Pan tool, click and
hold the left mouse button and drag to position the map to the desired
location in the map viewing window, then release the mouse button to
redraw and display the map at the new location.
Project List

The
Project List tool will
display a list of disaster related World Bank financed projects
(default), or all World Bank financed projects for a selected country.
To view a list of the World Bank projects in a given country, click on
the Project List tool,
and then click on the country of interest on the map. A message
appears on the bottom left side of the screen which identifies your
selection along with a count of World Bank projects in that country.
Clicking on this message positions the screen to show a listing of
those projects displayed below the map.
Print

The
Print tool
will print out the current map with an optional title and legend. To
print a map, click on the Print tool, enter an optional
caption, ensure that the 'show legend' box is checked (if desired),
select the Update View, and then
click the Print button to
generate the printout.
Tool Help

This
tool provides context sensitive tool tips which serve as an aid in
better understanding how to use a particular tool or feature of the
site. Tool Help is active when you initially access the site, and can
be deactivated at any time simply by clicking on a tool or feature.
Sliding Zoom

The Sliding
zoom bar
performs the task of both the Zoom In and Zoom Out tools. If you
select Global View, you will
zoom out to show the entire world in the map window. As you select
each horizontal bar from Global View to Country, the map will
zoom in until you are at the maximum level of magnification.
Overview Map

The
Overview Map
provides a reference point of where you are relative to the world map
by highlighting the location you are viewing enclosed by a red box.
Once you have zoomed in to a particular level of scale, you may use
the Overview Map to
pan from one location to another.
View by Hazard

The View by Hazard tab
is the default tab which you will see when you launch the Hotspots application.
Upon launching the Hotspots application, you will also see a global map
displaying All Hazards Exposure, along with a list of all disaster
related World Bank financed projects.
From this tab, you will be able to select from among 6 different natural
hazards, as well as exposure, human mortality, and economic loss maps at the
global, regional, and national boundary level. You will also be able to view
World Bank project details for the location, hazard, and risk of interest.
To view a natural disaster map of interest, please ensure the View by Hazard tab is active, select the location of
interest, then select the hazard type and risk type from the drop down menu.
About Hotspots

The
About Hotspots tab
provides introductory text and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about
the Natural Disaster Hotspots project. To display this information,
click on the About Hotspots tab.
View by Project

This
feature provides thematic maps which show counts of either World Bank
disaster related projects (default), or all World Bank lending
projects. In addition to
the maps, a list of projects associated to the selected country or
region appear below the map window. To display a map of the disaster
related projects or all World Bank projects, ensure that the View by Projects tab is active and then
select the appropriate radio button to indicate whether you want to
view all World Bank disaster related projects or all lending projects.
To generate a list of the projects displayed on the map, please click
on the Project List tool and click on the
country of interest.
Help

This
feature displays tips on how to use the Natural Disaster Hotspots
application. To view the help text, select the Help tab.
Select Location

The Select Location menu allows you to select
the desired area, region, or country of interest to display on the map. Click
to select the desired region or country from the drop down menu to view a
desired map.
Select Hazard & Risk

The Select Hazard & Risk
pick list menu allows you to select the desired hazard and risk map layer to
display. Click on the desired hazard and risk type from the drop down menu to
view the desired map.
Search Projects

The Search
Projects feature provides you
with the ability to search for World Bank projects, countries, and hazards.
Project Selection Radio
Button

The Project Selection Radio Button, on
the left side of the screen, is used in conjunction with the Project
List tool, the View by Projects tab, and the Search
Projects feature. This radio button will enable you to toggle between
searching and listing disaster related World Bank projects, or searching and
listing All World Bank lending projects.
Project List Message

This
message appears on the bottom left hand side of the screen and it
displays a count of the number of World Bank projects and location
resulting from your selection(s). Click on the message to view the
detailed list of projects based on your selection. Since this list
appears below the map image on most browsers, and can be easily
overlooked, this message provides a convenient method for scrolling
down for easy viewing of the projects.
